Hoofdpersonages

Het vierde collegejaar op Dellecher bestaat uit slechts zeven studenten en in de toneelstukken die ze opvoeren is de rolverdeling meestal hetzelfde. Richard is dé ster van elke show en heeft altijd de hoofdrol. Meredith is standaard de verleidster of de femme fatale. James speelt altijd de good guy of de held, terwijl Alexander juist altijd de schurk speelt. Wren is de naïeveling van elk stuk, en Filippa en Oliver vullen de overige rollen in.

Sfeer

Als ik meer sterren zou kunnen geven voor de sfeer dan zou ik dat doen. M. L. Rio weet een aparte en spannende sfeer te creëren in het boek die moeilijk te omschrijven is. De spanning en de suspense zorgen dat je weet dat er iets gebeurd is tijdens het laatste collegejaar, maar je weet niet helemaal precies wat. De sfeer wordt nog aparter, doordat de personages in bijna elke conversatie stukken van Shakespeare aanhalen en hiermee bijna een soort eigen taal hebben ontwikkeld.

Schrijfstijl

Doordat het gehele boek in ik-vorm is geschreven en je Oliver op de voet volgt als hij vertelt over wat er gebeurd is, word je letterlijk het verhaal ingetrokken. Het boek zelf leest ook als een toneelstuk, inclusief ‘Acts’, omdat M. L. Rio het Oliver op die manier laat vertellen. M. L. Rio schrijft vlot en geeft je echt het gevoel dat je er zelf bent of bij was. Vanaf de eerste pagina zit je er helemaal in.

‘Colborne nods vaguely. Then his expression changes, shifts, brow furrowing. “Do you blame Shakespeare for any of it?”
The question is so unlikely, so nonsensical coming from such a sensible man, that I can’t suppress a smile. “I blame him for all of it,” I say.
He mimics my smile, though his is tentative, unsure of where the humor really is. “Why’s that?”
“It’s hard to put into words.” I pause, waste a minute trying to collect my thoughts, then proceed without having collected anything at all. “We spent four years –and most of us years before that- immersed in Shakespeare. Submerged. Here we could indulge our collective obsession. We spoke it as a second language, conversed in poetry, and lost touch with reality, a little.” I reconsider. “Well, that’s misleading. Shakespeare is real, but his characters live in a world of real extremes. They swing from ecstasy to anguish, love to hate, wonder to terror. It’s not melodrama, though, they’re not exaggerating. Every moment is crucial.”’
